AgriStart program launches to support agrifood startups in Romania

AgriStart, a new program dedicated to agrifood startups in Romania, will provide mentorship, workshops, and expertise to ten selected teams. This initiative is aimed at helping these teams transition from idea to market, addressing critical challenges within the agricultural sector.

Organized by Impact Hub Bucharest and supported by EIT Food and Bayer, AgriStart is designed to empower founders and teams developing solutions for agriculture and the food industry. Applications are open until September 7, inviting innovative minds to join the program.

In the first phase, from September to October, the ten teams will collaborate with mentors, entrepreneurs, and industry experts. They will focus on validating their business models, understanding customer needs, market entry strategies, and pitching their ideas effectively. Each team will benefit from four individual mentoring sessions to refine their approach.

The two most promising startups will receive additional support in the second phase from October to November, including specialized services worth up to 2,000 EUR per startup and access to an Advisory Board of industry leaders. This intensive assistance will enhance their commercialization efforts and provide them with crucial insights and resources.

Romania boasts one of the largest agricultural areas in Europe, yet the sector faces significant challenges such as climate change, an aging workforce, and insufficient access to modern technologies. According to the "Romanian AgriFood Startups Overview Report 2024," the local agrifood startup ecosystem holds substantial potential, despite barriers related to financing, resources, and infrastructure.

Oana Craioveanu, CEO and co-founder of Impact Hub Bucharest, emphasizes the importance of transforming promising ideas into viable products. She states, "In Romania, there are many ideas and solutions that can contribute to the transformation of agriculture and the food system, but for many, the journey from innovation to market is still difficult."

Through AgriStart, the goal is to equip these selected teams not only with knowledge but also with a solid business foundation and a clear path for future development. Oana adds, "We want the ten selected teams to leave the program with a better-grounded business and a clear direction for the next stages of development."

As Romania continues to explore the potential of agriculture 4.0 and sustainable farming technologies, initiatives like AgriStart could play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the agrifood sector.
