ANAF achieves record revenue collection of 267.6 billion lei in first half of 2026

In the first six months of 2026, ANAF successfully collected 267.6 billion lei, marking a significant milestone in Romania's fiscal landscape. This figure represents an impressive increase of 22.4 billion lei compared to the same period last year, where the agency collected 245.2 billion lei.

The latest data, shared on August 18, highlights a year-on-year revenue growth of approximately 9.1%. Notably, VAT collections reached 64.8 billion lei, reflecting a remarkable 25.9% increase over the previous year, with a nominal rise of 13.3 billion lei.

Interim Minister of Finance, Alexandru Nazare, emphasized that these figures reaffirm the direction of stabilizing Romania's finances. He expressed optimism about the country's potential to achieve increasingly ambitious fiscal performance.

Nazare also pointed out that while the revenue from excises has reached 21.14 billion lei, there is still potential for recovery in this area. He cautioned that the increase in budget revenues must be accompanied by strict control over public spending.

The Minister stressed the importance of not allowing improved results to lead to permanent expenditures. Any new budgetary measures should be carefully analyzed alongside their financing sources, as Romania cannot afford unbacked spending.

Looking ahead, the agency S&P is set to evaluate Romania in mid-September, with a report expected in early October. Nazare noted that rating agencies are closely monitoring fiscal indicators and the authorities' ability to maintain public finance consolidation efforts. Ensuring the stability of public finances remains Romania's principal economic objective, a sentiment echoed by the recent reconfirmation of the sovereign rating by Moody's and Fitch.
