Cluj welcomes Romania's first museum built from scratch since 1989

The Muzeul Național de Istorie a Transilvaniei (MNIT) in Cluj has officially opened its doors, marking a significant milestone as the first museum constructed from the ground up in Romania since 1989. This impressive new facility, located in Florești, showcases a modern vision for preserving and presenting history.

The construction of the MNIT represents a substantial investment of 145 million lei, with 53% of the funding coming from PNRR funds and the remaining 47% provided by the Romanian state. Managed by Felix Marcu, the museum has been a decade-long project that finally came to fruition in just one year of building.

Spanning an area of 15,583 square meters, the museum boasts a spacious exhibition space of nearly 2,500 square meters and a total usable area of 11,344 square meters spread over three levels. It is equipped with large storage facilities and conservation-restoration laboratories, ensuring that it meets all the functions of a modern museum.

In a nod to the future, the MNIT sent a time capsule filled with messages and photographs on July 10, which will be opened in 2126. This thoughtful gesture connects the present to generations yet to come, enriching the cultural tapestry of Romania.

The opening ceremony was attended by Andras Istvan Demeter, the interim Minister of Culture, who highlighted the importance of supporting cultural initiatives that foster national pride and historical awareness. The MNIT stands as a beacon of progress, reflecting the dedication of those who envisioned and built it.
