Eduard Ionescu and Darius Movileanu have achieved a remarkable feat by securing the gold medal at the WTT Star Contender in Astana, Kazakhstan. Their victory marks the culmination of a flawless performance throughout the tournament.

The duo formed the strongest pair at the event, culminating in a spectacular final against the Russian team of Nikita Artemenko and Denis Ivonin, ranked #147 in the world. Ionescu and Movileanu triumphed with a score of 3-1, winning the first two sets 13-11 and 12-10 before closing the match 11-7.

This victory is their fourth consecutive win, solidifying their place as top contenders in the competition. Earlier in the tournament, they displayed their prowess with decisive victories against teams from France and China, including a 3-0 win over Flavien Coton and Thibault Poret and a hard-fought 3-2 victory against Li Hechen and Zhou Guanhong.

Romania was proudly represented by eight athletes at the WTT Star Contender Astana 2026, which took place from September 15 to 20. Unfortunately, Darius Movileanu's impressive run came to an end in the round of 16, where he faced Kanak Jha from the USA, ranked #25 in the world, losing in straight sets.

Elena Zaharia also showcased her talent, reaching the quarterfinals after notable victories, including a strong performance against Elizabeta Samara. However, she was ultimately defeated by Wang Yidi from China, ranked #5 globally.

Bernadette Szocs advanced to the round of 16 after a commanding victory against Zong Geman from China but encountered a tough opponent in Li Yu-Jhun from Taipei and lost her match.

With their outstanding performances, Ionescu and Movileanu have not only brought home gold but also inspired hope and pride for Romanian table tennis on the international stage.
