Greek Investments Surpass €5.5 Billion in Romania's Energy Sector
In 2023, Greek companies have made a significant impact on Romania's energy landscape, investing over €5.5 billion. This investment underscores the growing partnership between Greece and Romania in the energy sector.
PPC, one of the major players, has invested more than €4 billion in Romania, including substantial contributions to renewable energy. Looking ahead, PPC has earmarked an additional €3 billion for further investments by 2030, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
PPC Renewables stands out as the leading producer of renewable energy in Romania, alongside other notable Greek companies like Metlen, Helleniq Energy, and Sunel, which are also working on significant renewable energy projects.
As Greece diversifies its energy mix—where renewable energy accounted for 52.6% in 2023—Romania is urged to enhance its battery storage capabilities. Lili-Evangelia Grammatika, the Greek Ambassador to Romania, emphasized this need, highlighting the importance of cooperation for energy security and independence in the region.
The ambassador called for greater solidarity among EU member states and stressed the necessity of addressing distortions in the electricity market. She noted that Greece is at the forefront of major initiatives aimed at expanding energy capacities and improving network connectivity.
As Greece has become a net exporter of electricity, both countries share strategic common goals. The ambassador's remarks reflect a vision for a more integrated and resilient energy future, with Greek investments playing a vital role in Romania's energy transition.
