Microsoft celebrates 30 years in Romania and supports AI adoption

Microsoft recently marked a significant milestone, celebrating 30 years of operations in Romania. Since opening its first office in 1996, the company has grown to employ around 2,000 people across Bucharest, Iași, and Timișoara. This long-standing presence has allowed Microsoft to make a considerable impact on the local economy and workforce.

In line with its commitment to the future, Microsoft is set to support the responsible adoption of generative AI in the private sector. This initiative aligns with the findings from their Work Trend Index 2025, which describes a new type of company, termed the Frontier Firm. Romania's progress in generative AI is noteworthy, with 18% of the working-age population projected to utilize this technology by the second quarter of 2026.

While Romania currently ranks 65th out of 147 economies analyzed for generative AI usage, it shows potential for growth. Comparatively, neighboring countries like Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic report higher adoption rates, with 32.3%, 33.3%, and 31.2% respectively. This context highlights the importance of initiatives aimed at boosting digital skills and innovation in Romania.

Companies like Regina Maria and Banca Transilvania are already embracing AI, showcasing the trend's relevance across various sectors. Fady Chreih, CEO of Regina Maria, and Andreea Pleșea, Co-founder and COO of Druid AI, are leading efforts to integrate these technologies into their operations.

Moreover, Microsoft is committed to supporting digital transformation in key areas such as administration, education, and health. Gabriela Popescu, General Manager at Microsoft Romania, Moldova & CIS, emphasizes the company's role in fostering a digitally competent workforce. This effort is supported by the recognition of Microsoft as the most desired employer in Romania, based on a study that gathered nearly 10,900 responses, reflecting the company's positive reputation in the job market.
