New bridge connecting Romania and Ukraine set to open on October 8
The long-awaited new road bridge spanning the Tisa River between Romania and Ukraine is set to be opened to traffic on October 8. This significant infrastructure project will connect the municipality of Sighetu Marmației with the Ukrainian locality of Bila Ţerkva, enhancing cross-border connectivity.
Designed to last at least 100 years, the new bridge measures 268 meters in length and has been constructed at a cost of over 50 million euros. It features two parallel bridges with a three-meter gap between them, allowing for separate traffic flows in each direction. Each bridge is equipped with two lanes, as well as sidewalks for pedestrians, ensuring safe passage for all.
The bridge also includes five drainage bridges and a roundabout intersection, which will facilitate smoother traffic management. At its heart is a border point designed to meet Schengen guidelines, featuring six lanes for vehicles and two dedicated lanes for small vehicles, cargo transport, and diplomatic missions. There are also two administrative buildings for border police and customs, along with four inspection halls fully equipped for effective border control.
The demand for enhanced border traffic has risen significantly, particularly following the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. The old wooden and metal bridge, which has been in operation since 2000, has seen increased usage and is currently undergoing repairs due to structural concerns from prolonged use. The new bridge will operate alongside the existing one, providing much-needed relief and capacity for the growing traffic needs of the region.
