New pension accounts to boost investment opportunities in Romania

16 Sep 2026, 06:43

A significant step forward for financial security in Romania has been made with the preliminary adoption of a legislative project that establishes a legal framework for pension accounts. These accounts, known as Conturile de Economii și Investiții (CEI), are designed to provide individuals with a robust method for saving and investing for retirement.

Modeled after the well-known 401(k) and IRA accounts in the United States, the CEI accounts will enable beneficiaries to invest in capital market securities. This innovative approach opens up new avenues for investment, encouraging a culture of savings and financial planning among the Romanian population.

Beneficiaries of the CEI accounts will have the flexibility to choose a tax regime applicable to their contributions. They can opt for a system that offers tax deductibility with taxation upon withdrawal, or they may prefer a structure with no deductibility and no taxation at the time of withdrawal. This choice aims to cater to diverse financial strategies and preferences, empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their retirement savings.
