This year marks a significant milestone for OMV Petrom as it celebrates 25 years since its shares were first listed on the Bucharest Stock Exchange (BVB) on September 3, 2001. Over these years, OMV Petrom has become the largest integrated energy producer in Southeast Europe and a cornerstone of economic stability for Romania.

Since its listing, the total market capitalization of the BVB has grown impressively, increasing from 3.8 billion lei in 2001 to 7.08 billion lei today. This represents a remarkable 136-fold increase, showcasing the robust development of Romania's capital market. Additionally, the average daily turnover for shares on the main market has seen an extraordinary rise from 1.5 million lei to 122 million lei, an increase of 80 times.

The total value traded on the main market has also surged from 381 million lei in 2001 to approximately 20 billion lei today, reflecting a growth of 50 times. The number of annual transactions has skyrocketed from 357,000 to over 1.6 million, with projections suggesting around 2.5 million transactions for this year, surpassing the previous peak of 1.9 million in 2024.

OMV Petrom's own capital has also seen significant growth, with its market capitalization rising from 1.6 billion lei in 2002 to an impressive 75 billion lei today. This leap is further underscored by the fact that the initial listing multiplied the total market capitalization of the BVB nearly fourfold.

Petrom's shares have been a favorite among investors, with nearly 2.3 million transactions executed and a total trading value of approximately 61 billion lei. Currently, almost half a million Romanians hold direct investments in Petrom shares, while 8.5 million individuals save through pension funds linked to the company.

The contributions of OMV Petrom to the state budget since its privatization in 2005 have amounted to an astounding 48 billion euros in taxes and dividends. The Romanian state, through the Ministry of Energy, retains nearly 21% of Petrom’s shares, while OMV Aktiengesellschaft holds 51.2% and foreign investors own 3.7%.

Looking ahead, the Neptun Deep project, developed in partnership with Romgaz, is expected to position Romania as the largest natural gas producer in the European Union by delivering its first production in 2027. This project is anticipated to contribute 20 billion euros to the state budget and will have emissions estimated to be eight times lower than the industry average.

The journey of OMV Petrom over the past 25 years reflects not only its growth but also its vital role in the economic landscape of Romania, reinforcing a hopeful outlook for the future of the energy sector.
