Ploiești becomes a hub for social integration through sports

Ploiești is set to become the capital of social integration through sport, as it prepares to host the 19th edition of the Special Olympics Romania National Games from August 28 to 30, 2026. This year’s event is dedicated to the illustrious Nadia Comăneci, celebrating not only athletic excellence but also the spirit of inclusion.

The upcoming games will welcome over 300 athletes from 30 counties and Bucharest, representing 64 foundations, associations, mainstream and special schools, and centers of DGASPC. A dedicated team of 150 coaches, teachers, and family members will support the athletes, alongside 150 volunteers, medical personnel, and technical staff ensuring a smooth event.

The Special Olympics program highlights the importance of inclusion, as 3% of the global population lives with intellectual disabilities, making this community the largest among all disability categories. This initiative not only promotes sports but also fosters a sense of community and support for these athletes.

On August 29, the Torch of Hope will make its way through Ploiești, carried by Special Olympics athletes, local sports personalities, and representatives from law enforcement and the City Hall. The procession will begin at 6:00 PM from the City Hall, culminating in an Opening Ceremony at Sala Olimpia starting at 7:00 PM. The ceremony will feature a parade of delegations, the lighting of the Torch of Hope, the raising of the Special Olympics flag, and the recitation of the Special Olympics Oath.

A special musical performance by Nicola will add to the festivities, enhancing the atmosphere of unity and celebration. On August 30, athletes will compete in bocce and athletics finals at Sala Olimpia starting at 8:00 AM, while swimming finals and award ceremonies will take place at the Didactic Swimming Pool in Câmpina, also commencing at 8:00 AM.

Preliminary competitions for bocce and athletics will kick off on Friday at the University of Petroleum and Gas in Ploiești at 8:00 AM, with swimming preliminaries set for Saturday at 10:00 AM at the Didactic Swimming Pool in Câmpina. Additionally, free medical evaluations will be part of the Healthy Athletes program, underscoring the commitment to the health and well-being of all participants.
