In a significant move for the Romanian tourism sector, Rainbow Tours has acquired a majority stake in Paralela 45 Turism. This acquisition comes at a time when Rainbow Tours, a publicly traded company with a market capitalization of approximately 510 million euros, is making strides in expanding its portfolio.

The market dynamics for business travel are also evolving, with eTravel recently acquiring a majority stake in Accent Travel in Romania. Business travel is a lucrative segment in the European tourism market, accounting for around 10% of all tourist trips by EU residents and generating 13% of total tourism expenditure in the EU.

Travelers on business spend an average of 203 euros per night in Europe, significantly more than the 112 euros spent by vacationers. In Romania, guests traveling for professional reasons contribute between 20% and 25% of hotel revenues in Bucharest, highlighting the importance of this sector for local hospitality.

Despite Romania's potential, the country currently only sees 22% of its overnight stays coming from foreign visitors, compared to the EU average of 45%. The intensity of tourism in Romania is measured at 66 visitors per 100 residents, yet only 27.7% of Romanians aged 15 and over took at least one personal trip in 2024.

Notably, Romania has experienced an impressive recovery in its tourism sector, recording an 80% increase in turnover post-pandemic. This growth positions Romania as having the third-fastest increase in turnover in the EU, compared to an average growth rate of 34% across the region.

While Bucharest remains the dominant hub for business tourism, regional centers such as Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, and Iași are also emerging as important players. The emphasis on business travel underscores the significance of this sector for the upscale hotel market in Romania's major cities.
