Rheinmetall acquires Mangalia Shipyard to bolster naval construction in Romania

The acquisition of Șantierul Naval Mangalia for 138 million euros marks a significant step in enhancing Romania's naval capabilities. This strategic move will enable the shipyard to construct four military vessels for the Romanian Navy, reinforcing the country’s defense infrastructure.

Executed in collaboration with Swiss firm MSC, the transaction was finalized on October 9 and announced by Rheinmetall on October 19. The investment is not just a financial transaction but part of Rheinmetall's broader strategy to expand its activities in the defense industry across Southeast Europe.

With the shipyard positioned on the Black Sea coast, it holds an advantageous location for upcoming military naval projects. Rheinmetall envisions using the Mangalia facility as a hub for future military shipbuilding initiatives, while also maintaining capabilities for civilian construction and repairs.

The investment promises to revive industrial activities at the shipyard, contingent upon the new investors' plans being implemented effectively. Rheinmetall has specified that civil and military operations will be organized separately, ensuring a clear focus on both sectors.

The acquisition is expected to reorganize the shipyard into distinct sectors and security zones, which will enhance operational efficiency. By leveraging the existing infrastructure, the investors aim to cater not only to Romania’s needs but also to potential clients in the region.
