Romania achieves 17th place in both Open and Women's sections at Chess Olympiad
Romania has proudly secured 17th place in both the Open and Women's sections at the Chess Olympiad held in Uzbekistan. This accomplishment comes after the team entered the competition as the 23rd favorite among nearly 400 teams from over 200 federations and almost 2,000 players.
In the Open section, Romania's team showcased impressive skill with a record of 5 victories, 5 draws, and only 1 defeat. They faced strong opponents throughout the competition, contributing to their solid performance in the 11-round format. Notably, Bogdan-Daniel Deac achieved 14th place at board 1, while Filip Magold finished 6th at board 5.
The Romanian Women's team also demonstrated resilience, finishing 17th with a record of 7 wins, 1 draw, and 3 losses. Andreea Cosman notably placed 15th at board 4, adding to the team's commendable efforts. China emerged victorious in the Women’s section, while Uzbekistan claimed gold in the Open.
Romania also ranked 18th out of 187 federations in the Gaprindashvili Cup, further highlighting the country's growing prominence in the chess world. Alin Câmpeanu led the Romanian delegation, with Ivan Sokolov and Gergely Szabo serving as captains for the Open and Women’s teams, respectively.
During the competition, Felix Ilinca was unable to travel due to medical reasons, leading to Mircea Pârligras stepping in as his replacement. Romania participated in the Chess Olympiad from September 15 to 27, demonstrating dedication and talent on an international stage.
