Romania achieves record agricultural production in 2023

This year, Romania has reached the highest agricultural production levels in its history, marking a significant milestone for the nation's farmers. With unprecedented volumes of wheat, barley, and rapeseed, the country has demonstrated remarkable resilience and adaptability in the face of climatic challenges.

Despite experiencing drought and high temperatures since mid-July, Romania benefited from nearly ten months of accumulated precipitation prior to this period. This rainfall, which included snow during winter, allowed autumn crops to thrive before the heat wave set in. Farmers managed to push their autumn sowing dates later to ensure their crops received the necessary moisture.

The structure of cultivated land has shifted towards a greater focus on autumn crops, with farmers adjusting their planting calendars following the drought years of 2020-2025. This year, Romania harvested 13.4 million tons of wheat, 3.4 million tons of barley, and 3.52 million tons of rapeseed, showcasing a significant increase in dedicated areas for these crops at the expense of corn and soybeans.

Interestingly, while the west of Romania, including counties like Arad, Timiș, and Bihor, faced drought conditions, vital crops such as corn and sunflower remained largely unaffected. The total area planted with sunflowers increased to 1.17 million hectares, with estimates for sunflower production reaching between 2.6 and 2.7 million tons.

Romania stands out as the only European country to have increased agricultural volumes this year, especially as neighboring France has drastically reduced its corn projections. In addition, Romanian wheat has a competitive edge, priced 50-60 USD per ton higher than Ukrainian or Russian wheat, and rapeseed prices have surged by 50-60 euros per ton due to external market pressures.

Furthermore, Romania has secured its position as the leading exporter in the EU27 for wheat, corn, rapeseed, and sunflower seeds for the second consecutive year. Since July 1, the country has exported 2.35 million tons of wheat, 1.6 million tons of barley, and 0.8 million tons of rapeseed, reinforcing its vital role in agricultural trade within Europe.
