Romania Achieves Record Grain Exports in 2026/2027 Season

Romania has made a remarkable start to the 2026/2027 agricultural trading year, having sold over 2.5 million tons of common wheat in just the first ten weeks. This achievement marks an increase of 31.9% in wheat exports compared to the previous year, showcasing the country’s significant role in the European grain market.

In total, Romania exported 4.9 million tons of common wheat to the EU, contributing a substantial 31% of the total quantity marketed by member states. The country has solidified its position as the leading European exporter of cereals for the second consecutive year in the 2025/2026 season, topping the charts for both wheat and corn.

Romania’s barley exports have also seen growth, with over 1.2 million tons exported. This represents a 1% increase from last year, with a total delivery of 1.6 million tons of barley. Impressively, Romania accounted for approximately 75% of all barley delivered by the European community.

The majority of Romania’s barley exports went to Saudi Arabia, which received 53.8% of the total, followed by Jordan at 19.7% and Libya at 7.9%. On the wheat front, significant quantities also reached markets in Saudi Arabia, Algeria, and Nigeria, highlighting Romania's strategic export partnerships.

In the context of the wider EU market, where wheat sales have decreased by about 1% to the lowest level in three years, Romania's exports stand out as a beacon of success. In the previous trading year, Romania delivered 10.9 million tons to third countries, reflecting its robust agricultural output and export capabilities.
