Romania and the UK deepen ties through strategic dialogue and educational collaboration

A significant dialogue between Romania's Minister of Foreign Affairs Oana Țoiu and UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband took place in London on September 3, 2026. This meeting focused on four main priorities: the Romanian diaspora, economic cooperation, security, and educational and cultural collaborations.

The bilateral discussions come on the heels of an updated Strategic Partnership, formalized through a Joint Declaration signed in London in 2023. This partnership is crucial, especially as Romania has completed all technical criteria for OECD membership over the past year, with the collaboration with the UK being a vital component of this process.

Trade exchanges between Romania and the UK have surpassed €10 billion, highlighting a growing economic relationship. The UK ranks 11th among foreign direct investors in Romania, with over 7,000 British-owned companies registered in the country. Romanian entrepreneurs show increasing interest in the UK, particularly in sectors such as advanced technologies, financial services, and agriculture.

The discussions also touched on security matters at the Black Sea, with the Port of Constanța being a key point in ensuring trade security. Notably, the UK conducted an enhanced air policing mission over Romanian territory from March to July 2026.

Cultural ties were emphasized with mentions of Romanian language courses offered in British schools, as well as the Romanian language lectures at prestigious universities like Oxford and Cambridge. The British Council remains active in Romania and the UK has joined the Erasmus+ program, promoting youth mobility and educational exchange.

The meeting also addressed the mutual recognition of diplomas and qualifications, further fostering collaboration in education. Additionally, over 1 million Romanian citizens residing in the UK play a crucial role in strengthening bilateral relations.

Finally, the upcoming opening of the former Romanian Embassy in London between September 18-20 is a testament to the ongoing commitment to nurturing this important partnership. The London Architecture Festival will showcase the history of diplomatic collaboration between Romania and the UK, reflecting the deepening ties that continue to evolve.
