Romania becomes the second-largest corn producer in the EU
Romania has surpassed France in corn production, securing its position as the second-largest producer of corn in the European Union. This achievement comes as Romania is set to harvest over 7.8 million tons of corn, a significant increase from last year's harvest of over 6.8 million tons.
Poland remains the largest corn producer in the EU, with projections indicating it could yield approximately 9 million tons this year. Meanwhile, France, which has traditionally held the title of the largest corn producer, is facing a challenging season due to drought conditions. Its production is expected to drop to around 7 million tons, potentially marking its weakest harvest in the last 50 years.
The European corn harvest is estimated to be at its lowest level since 1995, with a total production of 48 million tons, which is 5% lower than previous forecasts and 16% below last year's figures. The harvested area across the EU is also decreasing, estimated at 7.4 million hectares, a decline of 10% compared to last year.
This year’s challenges have particularly impacted France and Hungary, contributing to the overall decline in the EU's corn production capacity. France's harvested area is projected to be the smallest in 58 years, underscoring the extent of the impact from adverse weather conditions.
