Romania celebrates first registered energy communities, marking a national milestone
In a significant development for renewable energy in Romania, the Autoritatea Națională de Reglementare în domeniul Energiei (ANRE) has registered the first two energy communities in the National Register of Energy Communities (RNCE). This achievement marks a historic first for the country, highlighting the growing role of local actors in the energy market.
The first registered Renewable Energy Community (CESR) is the Asociația Comunitatea Portului, while the first registered Citizen Energy Community (CEC) is the Societatea Cooperativă Energetică Micăcasa Coop. These registrations were made in accordance with the provisions of ANRE's President Order no. 50/2026, which outlines the procedures for establishing the RNCE.
The successful registration of these two communities represents the effective operationalization of the RNCE, paving the way for citizens and eligible entities to actively participate in the energy market. This initiative is seen as a vital step towards fostering a model of active participation from citizens and local actors in energy production and consumption.
ANRE encourages more citizens and eligible entities to develop and register their own energy communities, promoting a democratized energy market in Romania. The Order no. 50/2026 not only establishes the framework for these communities to be officially recognized by the state but also creates enclaves for energy production and consumption across the country.
As part of this effort, the RNCE will serve as a public, digitized database managed directly by ANRE. The procedure for registration involves three steps, making it accessible for those interested in contributing to the renewable energy landscape.
In Romania, prosumers currently hold a total installed capacity of approximately 3,000 MW, which is equivalent to the capacity of two Cernavodă nuclear power plants. This figure underscores the potential of local energy initiatives to significantly impact the country's energy landscape.
