01 Sep 2026, 09:56

Romania has successfully secured €13.5 billion in non-reimbursable grants through its National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). This milestone marks the conclusion of the implementation period of the PNRR, paving the way for substantial improvements across various sectors.

A newly opened section of the A7 Moldova Highway, stretching nearly 50 kilometers, exemplifies the significant infrastructure investments made possible by this funding. Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan highlighted that the PNRR has left a legacy of important investments in infrastructure, health, education, and energy efficiency.

Bolojan noted that major infrastructure projects include modernized and electrified railway systems, enhancing transportation connectivity throughout the country. Additionally, the healthcare network in Romania has seen improvements, ensuring better services for citizens.

Education also benefitted from the PNRR, with numerous schools being modernized, rehabilitated, and equipped with state-of-the-art technology. This focus on enhancing the quality of education reflects a commitment to fostering a brighter future for Romania's youth.

Local authorities have also completed various projects aimed at increasing energy efficiency, contributing to a more sustainable environment. While Romania has faced challenges, including losing €770 million due to missed salary reform in the public sector and nearly €100 million from incomplete decarbonization measures, the overall impact of the PNRR remains positive.

As authorities prepare to present the final status of projects, milestones, and funds attracted through the PNRR, the future looks promising for Romania. The successful implementation of these initiatives offers a solid foundation for continued growth and development.
