Romania enhances forest monitoring with satellite technology and AI
Romania is taking a significant step towards better forest management by implementing a new monitoring system that combines satellite imagery and artificial intelligence. This innovative project aims to reduce illegal logging and improve data-driven forest management across the country.
Valued at 272,605 million lei, the project was finalized as part of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). All components outlined in the PNRR have been successfully completed and accepted, marking a major milestone in environmental protection efforts.
The system consists of three main components. The satellite monitoring aspect will cover approximately 70,000 square kilometers of forested vegetation, generating alerts whenever changes in forest cover are identified. This proactive approach will help authorities respond quickly to potential environmental threats.
Another key element involves the installation of 350 video monitoring points for wood transport. Utilizing AI, the system will verify these transports by correlating data captured by cameras with information declared in SUMAL. Alerts will be triggered if a vehicle is found transporting wood without the appropriate authorization.
The third component leverages LiDAR technology to scan forest areas, allowing for the collection of three-dimensional data about the analyzed surfaces. This comprehensive monitoring framework, announced by Environment Minister Diana Buzoianu on August 31, aims to ensure that Romania's forests are protected and managed sustainably.
