Romania introduces its first rectangular coin featuring Nicolae Tonitza

In a significant milestone for numismatics in Romania, the National Bank of Romania has launched the country's first rectangular coin today. This unique coin is part of a new series dedicated to Romanian painters, highlighting the rich cultural heritage of the nation.

The inaugural coin in the 'Pictori români' series features the renowned painter Nicolae Tonitza. The colorful face of the coin showcases Tonitza's famous painting 'Flori galbene', which is part of the National Museum of Art of Romania's collection. Interestingly, this painting was also included in the art collection of the National Bank during the interwar period.

The coin has a nominal value of 10 lei and was issued in the year 2026. Its design includes the inscription 'ROMANIA' in an arc, along with the coat of arms of Romania. Weighing 31.103 grams and measuring 43x31 mm, the coin is edged with a serrated pattern, ensuring a distinctive appearance.

The reverse side of the coin features a portrait of Nicolae Tonitza, along with his name and the years he lived, 1886-1940. A limited mintage of 500 pieces has been approved for this numismatic release, making it a collector's item.

The selling price for this silver coin is 1,150.00 lei, including VAT. This price also covers a presentation brochure and a certificate of authenticity. The coins from the 'Pictori români' series are legal tender in Romania, adding to their appeal as both a work of art and a piece of currency.
