Romania is well-prepared for winter gas supply
Romania is entering this winter in a strong position, with gas storage levels on track to meet the target of 90% by November 1. Cristina Păun, the deputy director of the Federation of Utility Companies in Energy (ACUE), assures that there are no concerns about achieving this goal, similar to previous years.
The country's gas storage is currently above the European average, and Păun emphasizes that consumers are protected regarding both price and quantity. Major electricity suppliers, who also provide natural gas, are facing significant cash flow challenges, yet Păun remains optimistic about price stability over the winter months.
Given that 80% of residential gas consumption occurs during winter, it is crucial for suppliers to ensure a steady supply. Păun notes that there may be moments when suppliers need to purchase gas to meet demand, especially during colder days with technical extraction limitations.
The government has implemented measures such as the ePIDS platform, which supports approximately 740,000 vulnerable consumers based on OUG nr. 35/2025. Păun advocates for targeted assistance for these consumers and highlights the need for better identification and communication regarding eligibility for support.
Looking ahead, there is uncertainty about gas pricing after March 31, 2027, but Păun suggests that offers might emerge to allow for annual costs to be spread out in monthly payments. She also calls for the state to increase liquidity in the wholesale market and to consider support schemes for large industrial consumers.
The recent Natural Gas Forum, co-organized by Financial Intelligence and the Intelligent Energy Association, reflects ongoing dialogue about Romania's energy landscape. Cristian Bușoi has confirmed that the nation's gas deposits are exceeding targets and that central heating systems are assured, reinforcing a positive outlook for the winter ahead.
