Romania leads EU in construction production growth with 4.9% increase

In June, Romania achieved a remarkable 4.9% increase in construction production compared to May, marking the highest growth in the European Union. This achievement stands in stark contrast to the overall decline seen across the EU, which experienced a 1% decrease in construction output during the same month.

The positive trend in Romania's construction sector is further highlighted by a significant 20.1% rise in the volume of construction works compared to May, based on raw figures. When adjusted for working days and seasonality, the increase remains impressive at 4.9%. Year-on-year, compared to June 2025, the volume of construction works in Romania surged by 19.9% in raw terms and 13.1% when adjusted.

While Romania thrived, the broader construction landscape in the eurozone faced challenges, with a 1.3% decrease in production in June. Notably, the decline was more pronounced in countries like Slovakia (-4.6%), Hungary (-3.9%), and France (-2.9%). In contrast, Sweden and the Netherlands saw modest increases of 2% and 1%, respectively.

Looking at the bigger picture, Romania's construction production has shown resilience. In comparison to June 2025, the country stands out with an 18.4% increase in production, contributing positively amidst the struggles faced by other EU nations.

Despite the challenges, there were some bright spots within the eurozone, such as a 0.3% increase in engineering works. However, the overall sentiment remains cautious as many countries grapple with declines in key areas, particularly in building construction.
