Romania leads EU with significant fiscal correction

07 Sep 2026, 11:57

In a remarkable turnaround, Romania has achieved one of the most significant fiscal corrections in the European Union over the past year. From a staggering budget deficit of 9.3% of GDP in 2024, the country has successfully reduced this figure to 7.9% in 2025, marking a substantial step towards fiscal sustainability.

At the beginning of 2025, Romania entered the year with the highest fiscal deficit in the EU, exceeding 9%. However, the government's efforts have placed the nation on a path to improvement, with projections estimating a further reduction to 6.2% in 2026. This positions Romania as the country with the most extensive deficit reduction projected in the EU for the second consecutive year.

While the EU average deficit stood at 3.1%, Romania's commitment to lowering its deficit is critical for ensuring that public finances are placed on a sustainable basis. Alexandru Nazare, the Minister of Finance, emphasizes the importance of this correction, noting that today's deficits become tomorrow's debt and interest payments.

As Romania continues to navigate its fiscal challenges, the results of these efforts not only reflect the resilience of the nation's economic policies but also highlight a commendable commitment to fiscal responsibility in an ever-changing economic landscape.
