Romania receives €2.5 billion payment to boost defense capabilities

Romania has received its first payment of €2.5 billion through the SAFE defense instrument, marking a significant step for the country's defense initiatives. This payment represents 15% of Romania's total allocation of €16.7 billion under the SAFE program.

The SAFE instrument, with a total budget of €150 billion, is designed to provide loans to EU member states. It facilitates the joint procurement of vital defense resources, including ammunition, missiles, air defense systems, and ground combat systems produced within the EU.

This funding is part of the European Commission's ReArm Europe/Readiness 2030 plan, which aims to unlock over €800 billion in defense investments across Europe. The pre-financing provided by SAFE will help Romania accelerate its priority investments in defense, enhancing the nation’s military capabilities.

SAFE is structured to allow for swift and coordinated actions, improving the ability of European forces to work together effectively. This initiative also strengthens Europe's defense industry, contributing to a more robust collective security framework.

The European Commissioner for Defense and Space, Andrius Kubilius, highlighted the importance of this payment, stating, 'This funding will strengthen Romania's defense capabilities and industrial base.' He emphasized that SAFE is a clear demonstration of the EU's firm commitment to European security.

Following the completion of all necessary procedural steps, Romania can expect further payments as it meets agreed-upon milestone objectives. The SAFE instrument is financed through EU loans from financial markets, benefiting from the strong credit rating of the European Union.
