Romania receives €2.5 billion to boost defense capabilities

Romania has marked a significant milestone in its defense strategy with the receipt of its first payment of €2.5 billion under the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) defense instrument. This initial disbursement represents 15% of Romania's total allocation of €16.7 billion, providing a strong foundation for enhancing the country's military capabilities.

Approved on August 26, this pre-financing will enable Romania to accelerate priority defense investments. The funding is vital for modernizing Romania's military and strengthening its resilience on the eastern flank of the European Union and NATO.

SAFE, which is a €150 billion financial instrument, is designed to facilitate swift, coordinated action among EU member states. It aims to improve the ability of European forces to work together and strengthen Europe’s defense industry through joint procurement and closer cross-border cooperation.

The funding will not only bolster Romania’s defense capabilities but also contribute to Europe's overall security, reflecting the EU’s commitment to the resilience and defense of its Eastern Flank. Andrius Kubilius, the Commissioner for Defense and Space, emphasized that this payment is a major milestone for European defense and a step towards a more sovereign Europe.

The SAFE instrument is financed through EU borrowing on financial markets, with loans that are competitively priced and attractively structured for long durations. This ensures that Romania can benefit from favorable terms, supported by the EU’s strong credit rating. Further payments will follow as Romania meets agreed milestones and implementation requirements, paving the way for a stronger future in European defense.
