Romania receives additional F-16 fighter jet from Norway

Romania has welcomed an extra F-16 fighter jet from Norway, bringing the total number of delivered aircraft to 21 as of August 2025. This addition comes in light of delays in the original delivery schedule, with the country set to receive 32 F-16s in total, a deal signed in 2022 for a price of 388 million euros.

The first three F-16s arrived in Romania in November 2023, with the latest batch of three jets delivered in August 2025. The remaining 11 aircraft are expected to complete the delivery by the end of that year. The delays in shipments were largely due to the producer prioritizing support for Ukraine, leading to significant penalties as noted by Minister of Defense Radu Miruță.

These Norwegian jets are maintained to the highest standards, ensuring that they can be operational for a minimum of 10 years. Minister Miruță explained in Parliament that the acquisition of these fighter jets represents a capability transfer between allied NATO states, enhancing Romania's military readiness.

Interestingly, Romania's military aviation currently has more F-16s than available pilots, highlighting a resource management challenge. The number of flight hours for these aircraft is steadily increasing, and missions focused on air policing against drones are helping to prepare pilots for future operations.

Minister Miruță pointed out that these planes do not fly independently, emphasizing the importance of adequate pilot training and resources. He also provided insights in an interview on ProTV on September 28, discussing the ongoing developments in Romania’s military aviation capabilities.
