Romania secures €52 million in state aid for cattle breeders

The European Commission has approved a significant state aid scheme worth €52 million aimed at supporting cattle breeders in Romania. This initiative will provide direct grants of up to €50,000 per enterprise, helping to stabilize and develop the agricultural sector amidst challenging economic conditions.

This aid scheme falls under the temporary framework for state aid in response to the crisis in the Middle East (METSAF), which was adopted by the Commission on April 29, 2026. The support is designed to be effective until December 31, 2026, allowing ample time for enterprises engaged in primary agricultural production to benefit.

The Commission evaluated the scheme in accordance with EU state aid rules and found that it meets the requirements stipulated in METSAF. It concluded that the scheme is necessary, appropriate, and proportional to facilitate economic activity in the agricultural sector.

Further, the aid will be distributed based on a clearly defined budget and aims to temporarily support the development of businesses within agriculture, fishing, and transport sectors. METSAF also introduces temporary adjustments to enhance flexibility and increase aid intensities to address sudden spikes in electricity prices.

The European Commission will continue to monitor the implementation and scope of the framework, ensuring that it remains effective in promoting economic growth and resilience in Romania's agricultural landscape.
