Romania sees a net gain of 72 billion euros from the EU over 19 years

In the past 19 years, Romania has received an impressive 108 billion euros from the European Union, resulting in a net gain of 72 billion euros after accounting for the 36 billion euros paid into the EU budget. This substantial sum has been invested into vital infrastructure, including highways, hospitals, schools, and agricultural subsidies, significantly contributing to the country's development.

Public analyst Adrian Echert recently shared insights on his Facebook page, addressing a common misconception surrounding Romania's financial contributions to the EU. He pointed out that the narrative of Romania paying more than it receives stems from a misleading comparison between total contributions and specific funding channels, such as the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).

Echert emphasized that counting unabsorbed funds as losses misrepresents Romania's financial position. He highlighted that the country has a low absorption capacity for EU funds, a challenge compounded by bureaucratic hurdles that leave potential resources untapped each budget cycle.

Notably, the largest highway construction company in Romania is a local firm, ensuring that the funds are cycled back into the Romanian economy. Workers on construction sites are paid in lei, meaning their earnings are reinvested within the country, supporting local businesses and communities.

Echert criticized those who advocate for a confrontational stance with Brussels, suggesting that they protect the administration responsible for Romania's inability to fully utilize available EU funds. He argues that the issue is not about paying more into the EU than receiving, but rather about enhancing the country's capacity to access and effectively use the resources provided.
