Romania shines with five medals at the 2026 World University Weightlifting Championships

Romania has made a remarkable impression at the 2026 World University Weightlifting Championships in Doha, claiming a total of five medals. This success includes three medals for men and two for women, showcasing the country's strength in the sport.

Leading the charge was Romanian athlete Paul Ioniță, who earned three medals in the men's 110 kg category. Ioniță secured two silver medals and one bronze, lifting 163 kg in the snatch to earn bronze, while also achieving a silver in the clean and jerk with a lift of 196 kg. Despite a close attempt at 202 kg, he finished with a silver medal in the total, amassing 359 kg.

On the women's side, Cosmina Pană also delivered an impressive performance, bringing home two silver medals on September 8. Competing in the 53 kg category, Pană lifted 78 kg in the snatch and recorded a total of 174 kg, further showcasing her talent. Although she placed fourth in the clean and jerk with a lift of 96 kg, her efforts earned her silver medals in both the total and snatch categories.

The competition saw a strong showing from other athletes, with all three gold medals in the women's 53 kg category going to Taiwanese athlete Cheng Ting-I. Romania's achievements at this event highlight the growing prowess of its weightlifters on the international stage.
