Romania strengthens cultural ties through Francophonie participation

Romania's participation in the Francophonie Summit illustrates over three decades of institutional and cultural relationships with Francophonie. The country has been a full member of the International Organization of La Francophonie since 1993, showcasing its commitment to promoting French language and culture.

Having hosted the Francophonie Summit in 2006, which was the first of its kind in Europe outside France, Romania continues to make its mark on the international Francophone stage. Romania participated in the Francophonie Village events in Djerba in 2022 and Paris in 2024, with plans for a significant presence at Phnom Penh in 2026.

At the Djerba event, Romania showcased the traditional 'cămașa cu altiță', a cultural emblem that gained UNESCO recognition as an intangible cultural heritage element on December 1, 2022. This highlights Romania's efforts to promote its cultural identity and heritage on a global platform.

In Paris, Romania presented its major international festivals and showcased musical and theatrical projects, under the banner 'La Roumanie, j’en ai envie!'. These initiatives not only celebrate Romania's cultural vibrancy but also enhance its visibility within the Francophone community.

The upcoming 2026 edition promises an extensive representation of Romania, contributing to stronger ties with fellow member states and fostering new cultural collaborations with Cambodia. Romania's continued participation underscores its dedication to cultural dialogue, heritage promotion, and contemporary creation in the francophone space.
