Romania to Host European Capital of Culture in 2034

Romania is set to welcome a new European Capital of Culture in 2034, marking an exciting opportunity for cultural development. This announcement comes from the Minister of Culture, Demeter András István, who highlighted the significance of this title in connection with the National Culture Strategy 2027-2034.

The new framework proposed by the European Commission aims to simplify the candidacy process and place a stronger emphasis on the long-term impact of the title. Cities will now need to focus not only on the events during the year they hold the title, but also on the cultural heritage and lasting effects on the local community.

The first candidacies for the title in 2034 are expected to be submitted in the autumn of 2028, with finalist cities announced in 2029. The winning city will then have approximately five years to prepare its cultural program for 2034.

Romania has previously experienced the benefits of hosting this title. Sibiu was celebrated as the European Capital of Culture in 2007, followed by Timișoara in 2023. Cities that have held the title reported increased cultural activity, the development of new cultural spaces, and a boost in tourism, alongside strengthened international cooperation.

Minister Demeter emphasized the need for a coherent national framework to support candidate cities in developing their cultural projects. The goal is for the future European Capital of Culture to become a 'flagship project' for Romania, contributing to sustainable and inclusive urban development.
