Romania takes a stand against antisemitism with new initiatives

Romania is ready to play an active role in the new UN working group dedicated to combating antisemitism. This commitment comes as Nicușor Dan, the president of Romania, highlighted the country's proactive measures in addressing this pressing issue.

During a recent meeting in New York with Ronald S. Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress, Nicușor Dan underscored Romania's second National Strategy for the Prevention and Combat of Antisemitism. He emphasized the alarming rise of antisemitism while also acknowledging Lauder's efforts in promoting religious freedom.

As part of its educational reforms, Romania has introduced Holocaust education as a mandatory subject in high schools. This initiative reflects the country's ongoing dedication to educating future generations about the past and fostering a society resistant to prejudice.

Nicușor Dan, alongside Mirabela Grădinaru, paid tribute to the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks by laying flowers at the 9/11 Memorial in New York. This act of remembrance highlights Romania's solidarity with global communities in times of tragedy.

In addition to his meeting with Lauder, Dan also met with Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, where he expressed Romania's deep gratitude. This engagement further cements Romania's role on the international stage as a model of resilience against antisemitism.
