Romania to be Guest of Honour at Frankfurt Book Fair in 2028
Romania has been honored with the title of Guest of Honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2028, a prestigious recognition that highlights the country's cultural significance in the literary world. The Ministry of Culture has designated the Office of Film and Cultural Investments to coordinate the program for this significant event.
However, this decision has sparked a wave of discontent among writers and editors who express concerns about the Office's experience in the field of literature. They have launched a petition urging the Minister to reconsider the decision, emphasizing that the participation of publishers and writers is crucial for organizing a successful program.
Lidia Bodea, the vice president of the Romanian Publishers Association, voiced her surprise and concern, stating, 'We are going to an international book fair, the most important international book fair.' She added, 'I am stunned. You cannot go with dances; I dread the thought that we might attend in good Romanian tradition, with some folk dances, the smell of grilled sausages, and aged plum brandy.'
Andras Demeter, the interim Minister of Culture, has responded to the criticism, assuring that the decision is not final and that a government resolution will establish the budget and institutions involved in organizing the event. He emphasized that the role of the Office is not to replace the book industry but to bring together various perspectives to successfully deliver the project.
Demeter expressed confidence in the Office's ability to navigate the complexities of this initiative, stating, 'If it has managed to make a kind of slalom with authorities, with major international producers, and all ambassadors, I have no doubt it can do the same with representatives of various sectors in the book industry.'
In contrast, the Czech Republic is set to be the Guest of Honour in 2026, having already developed a program centered around literature, including exhibitions, performances, and other cultural events. Dan Croitorul, the editorial director of a publishing house, emphasized the need for Romania's participation to translate as many works of Romanian authors as possible for international audiences.
The promotional program for the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2028 will kick off in October 2027 and extend until 2029, featuring events across various cities in Germany to showcase Romania's rich literary heritage.
