Romania to Receive 14.3 Million Euros for Recovery from Severe Flooding
The European Commission has decided to allocate 134.8 million euros from the European Union's Solidarity Fund to support regions affected by catastrophic weather events. Romania will benefit from 14.3 million euros to aid recovery efforts following severe flooding that struck the Central, Sud Muntenia, and North-East regions between late May and early June 2025.
These floods caused significant damage, particularly to the Praid salt mine, and led to the erosion of parts of the Corund riverbed. The infrastructure designed to manage water flow was also impacted, resulting in widespread power outages across the affected areas.
The summer of 2025 was marked by a series of extreme weather conditions, including prolonged droughts, intense heat waves, and multiple severe wildfires. The most devastating heat wave began on August 8, 2025, tragically leading to eight fatalities and necessitating mass evacuations in certain regions.
Spain is also among the countries receiving support, with a total of 120.5 million euros allocated to their recovery efforts. This includes an advance payment of 30.1 million euros made in May 2026, with the remaining 90.4 million euros set to be disbursed soon.
