Romania welcomes first electric train from China, enhancing travel between Bucharest and Brașov

A new era in Romanian rail travel has begun with the introduction of the first electric train from China, operated by Astra Trans Carpatic. This premier service connects Bucharest and Brașov, making several trips a day and offering a fresh option for travelers on this popular route.

The Chinese train, produced by CRRC, features three carriages and has been designated as an InterRegio train. Although it can reach speeds up to 160 km/h, it operates within the restrictions of the route, where no train is permitted to exceed 140 km/h. The journey between the two cities takes approximately two and a half hours, with the first departure from Bucharest at 7:44 AM and from Brașov at 11:46 AM.

Notably, this train is the only one of its kind arriving in Romania, as no additional units are expected. It arrived in the country in the spring of 2024 and underwent testing on the CFR network to secure the necessary authorizations and certifications for passenger service. Tickets are priced at 75 lei, making it an accessible choice for many.

The introduction of this train adds to the nearly 50 trains that operate daily between Bucharest and Brașov, with services provided by six different railway companies. Among the competition are the latest Alstom Coradia trains from IRC and comfortable sleeping cars from Astra Trans Carpatic that run on routes to Timișoara and Arad.

As Romania continues to develop its rail infrastructure, the arrival of the Chinese electric train marks a significant step forward in enhancing connectivity and travel options for its citizens.
