Romania's First Velorail Route Unveiled in Mureș

The inaugural velorail route in Romania has officially opened, connecting the scenic locales of Râciu and Sânmartinu de Câmpie. Spanning an impressive 11 kilometers, this new attraction promises to offer breathtaking views of the beautiful landscapes in Râciu.

This unique experience is made possible through the use of ciclodrezine, pedal-powered vehicles that glide along the railway tracks. Each ciclodrezina accommodates four people: two pedalers at the front and two passengers seated behind. Designed for both comfort and adventure, the front seats are classified as class 2, while the back seats offer a class 1 experience.

The project took two years to realize, spearheaded by the local government and the Asociația Mocănița Transilvaniei. Alin Ciprian Belean, the mayor of Râciu, has been instrumental in bringing this vision to life, alongside Cristian Moldovan, a representative of the association.

The route utilizes a narrow-gauge railway that had been abandoned for nearly three decades before its transformation into a tourist attraction. Originally constructed in 1912, the railway had suffered significant theft, including the loss of its stones, making this revival even more remarkable.

Visitors can rent a ciclodrezina for a fee of 150 lei, offering an accessible way to experience the charm of the countryside. With 64 similar routes operating in France, Romania's new velorail project opens up exciting possibilities for eco-friendly tourism and local exploration.
