Romania's Pig Population Grows Significantly by May 2026

As of May 1, 2026, Romania's pig population has reached an impressive 3,260,589 heads, marking an 11.6% increase from the previous year. This growth represents an addition of 337,642 pigs compared to May 1, 2025, when the count stood at 2,922,947.

The breeding stock has seen a remarkable surge, increasing by 18.9% to total 258,260 heads. This equates to an increase of 40,974 breeding pigs compared to last year, highlighting the strengthening of the country's livestock sector.

Regional dynamics also reflect significant changes. The proportion of pigs in the West region has grown by 2.1 percentage points, while the South-Muntenia region has seen a rise of 1.4 percentage points. The South-East region has experienced a smaller increase of 0.4 percentage points.

However, not all regions have fared equally. The North-West region recorded a decrease of 1.8 percentage points, and the South-West Oltenia region saw a decline of 1.4 percentage points. Additionally, the North-East and Central regions each faced a drop of 0.3 percentage points, while Bucharest-Ilfov experienced a slight decrease of 0.1 percentage points.

These developments indicate a positive trend in pig farming in Romania, with substantial growth in certain areas that promises to bolster the agricultural landscape.
