Romania's Young Translators to Shine in European Contest
Romania is set to select 33 high schools to participate in the annual 'Juvenes Translatores' translation contest, which invites 17-year-old students from all EU member states to showcase their language skills.
The 'Juvenes Translatores' contest, organized by the European Commission, aims to encourage foreign language learning and provide students with the opportunity to test their translation competencies. Each selected high school can enroll up to five students, contributing to the approximately 3,000 students from over 700 high schools across Europe who participate each year.
The timeline for the 2026-2027 edition includes the registration of schools from September 1 to October 12, 2026, followed by an electronic lottery to announce the selected schools on October 15, 2026. The contest will take place online on November 26, 2026, with winners announced on February 11, 2027. The celebration of achievements will culminate in a ceremony and visit to Brussels from April 8 to 10, 2027.
In other educational news, the number of first-time students in Brașov has grown by nearly 700 over the past 16 years, and this year, the local Directorate of Social Assistance is running the 'Primul ghiozdan' program, providing essential school supplies to young learners.
Meanwhile, the 'Ergopolis' project has been successfully completed by the 'George Emil Palade' University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science, and Technology in Târgu Mureș, marking a significant investment of nearly 30 million euros and supported by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
Romania's students have also excelled internationally, earning four gold medals, two silver, and three bronze at the International Earth Science Olympiad held in Turin, Italy, from August 20 to 27.
On the administrative side, the Minister of Education, Mihai Dimian, has assured that support for students through social scholarships will not be reduced and anticipates an increase in eligible students due to a projected 7% rise in the income threshold.
In an innovative stride, the 'Gheorghe Asachi' Technical University in Iași has developed a new technology for producing energy-efficient windows at its research center in Botoșani. Additionally, schools in Bihor have achieved the highest graduation rates in the last 15 years, while disparities between urban and rural student performance have been highlighted.
As part of the ongoing commitment to innovation, the National Authority for Research has announced a competition for the organization and development of innovative clusters, further fostering partnerships in education and research.
Lastly, the Academy of Scientists in Romania has launched the 'FEM - Women in Excellence and Mentorship' program, aimed at supporting women at the beginning of their careers, reflecting a broader commitment to inclusivity and empowerment in education.
