Scorniceşti's new energy storage system marks a milestone for Romania's energy future
Romania is set to enhance its energy resilience with the completion of a significant energy storage system in Scorniceşti. The Polish group R.Power has finalized the installation of 46 battery units, creating a system with a capacity of 127 MW and 254 MWh. This project represents R.Power's first large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Romania and will be one of the largest of its kind in Central and Eastern Europe.
Financed with a total investment of 46 million euros, the project benefits from substantial support, including 44 million euros from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and a 2.3 million euro bank guarantee from the Polish Development Bank (BGK). It reflects a strategic venture between R.Power and the French Eiffel Investment Group, reinforcing the commitment to renewable energy solutions in the region.
Construction work began in the spring of 2026, with the foundations laid and all battery units installed within the last three months. Additionally, 23 medium-voltage transformer stations have been delivered in containers, paving the way for the project's connection to Romania's national high-voltage transport network, scheduled for late 2026 or early 2027.
The Scorniceşti BESS is poised to support the stabilization of Romania's energy system. As the country integrates more battery storage systems, it strengthens its energy network and positions itself as a key player in the Eastern European energy landscape. With R.Power's portfolio in the region reaching 0.9 GW/3 GWh across operational and under-construction projects, the future looks promising for renewable energy in Romania.
Florin Federenciuc, the country director of R.Power Romania, highlights the company’s rapid growth since launching its first photovoltaic projects in Romania just two years ago. As R.Power continues to expand its footprint across Romania and beyond, it reaffirms its role as a leading independent power producer in the renewable energy sector.
