Timișoara enhances its sports infrastructure with new aquatic complex and ice rink

The city of Timișoara is set to enhance its sports infrastructure with the acquisition of Arena Aqua Sport, a swimming complex located on the site of the former Ștrand al Tineretului. This acquisition will be made at no cost to the municipality, marking a significant step forward in promoting sports within the community.

Dominic Fritz, the 42-year-old mayor of Timișoara, expressed his commitment to developing the city’s sports facilities as part of its strategic vision. He also extended his gratitude to the Țiriac Foundation for their dedication to the Timișoara community.

Arena Aqua Sport covers an impressive area of 7.4 hectares and had previously been under a 30-year concession that began in 2004. This concession was recently terminated by mutual agreement, paving the way for the municipal takeover of the facility.

In addition to the swimming complex, Ion Țiriac, a former professional tennis player and a significant figure in sports, is planning to construct an ice rink in Timișoara, which he intends to donate to the municipality. At 87 years old, Țiriac’s ongoing contributions to sports in Romania showcase his commitment to fostering athletic opportunities for future generations.

Ion Țiriac has a remarkable background in sports, having started his career playing ice hockey and representing Romania at the 1964 Olympics. He has also made his mark in tennis, winning 22 doubles titles and capturing the prestigious Roland Garros title in 1970 alongside Ilie Năstase.

With these developments, Timișoara is poised to become an even more vibrant hub for sports and community engagement, promoting a healthier and more active lifestyle for its residents.
