Tourism in Romania sees significant growth in August 2026

In August 2026, Romania welcomed 2.269 million tourists, marking a 9% increase in arrivals compared to the previous year. This surge is complemented by a notable 10.2% rise in overnight stays, which reached 5.641 million during the same month.

Romanian tourists accounted for a substantial 84.8% of total arrivals, while foreign visitors represented 15.2%. Among the foreign tourists, the leading nationalities included travelers from Germany, Italy, and the USA, with 181,400, 148,300, and 122,400 arrivals, respectively.

The average stay for Romanian tourists was 2.6 days, slightly longer than the 2-day average for foreign visitors. In total, during the first eight months of 2026, Romania recorded 9.756 million arrivals, with 81% coming from Romanian tourists and 19% from abroad.

The overall number of overnight stays for the year so far reached 21.184 million, with 82% attributed to Romanian tourists. The net occupancy rate for tourist accommodations in August was 45.2%, a modest increase of 1.5 percentage points compared to August 2025.

Key regions such as Constanța, Bucharest, and Brașov played significant roles in this tourism growth. Constanța alone recorded 1.862 million arrivals and 5.758 million overnight stays. Bucharest saw 1.268 million arrivals and 2.597 million overnight stays, while Brașov attracted 878,300 arrivals and 1.687 million overnight stays.

As of June 10, 2026, the tourism infrastructure consisted of 16,347 accommodation structures, including 9,523 hotels and 6,824 rental apartments and rooms. This robust growth in tourism reflects the increasing appeal of Romania as a destination for both local and international travelers.
