Improved Police Conduct Marks Progress in Romania's Treatment of Detainees

Romania has made notable strides in preventing mistreatment by police and in prisons. Following visits from the Committee for the Prevention of Torture in 2025, improvements in police behavior have been observed, reflecting a commitment to better treatment of individuals in custody.

Despite this progress, concerns remain. The Council of Europe has expressed worries about the poor conditions of detention and the issue of overcrowding in prisons. Such challenges highlight the ongoing need for reform and oversight in the Romanian justice system.

Additionally, the Committee's delegation did record some allegations of physical mistreatment, including incidents involving minors. These reports included claims of slapping and punching, underscoring the importance of continued vigilance in addressing such serious issues.

Authorities have been advised to implement further measures, such as providing independent investigators to prosecutors. This recommendation aims to ensure accountability and transparency in handling allegations of mistreatment, fostering a safer environment for all individuals in the justice system.
