14 Jul 2026, 10:25

Romania has achieved the best stock market performance among all major global equity markets over the past decade, showcasing remarkable growth. The BET-TR index has generated a total return of 758%, making it a standout in the financial landscape.

An investment of 1,000 euros made ten years ago would now be worth approximately 8,580 euros. This exceptional growth far surpasses that of Slovenia, which achieved a return of +662%, and Taiwan, with +640%. To put it in perspective, even the well-regarded NASDAQ 100 index saw a return of +628% during the same period.

In 2026, Romania continues to maintain its position among the best-performing markets worldwide, with the BET-TR index posting a return of around 32% in euros since the beginning of the year. While Hungary exceeded Romania with a return of +37%, the country's growth remains noteworthy.

The financial sector is thriving, benefiting from increased revenues, expanding lending, and enhanced financial services. Banks represent 26% of the BET index, reflecting their crucial role in this economic success.

Furthermore, the energy sector, which comprises about 60% of the BET index, is bolstered by one of the most extensive natural gas exploitation projects in Europe. Approximately 35% of the index is directly linked to the Neptun Deep gas project, expected to benefit companies like OMV Petrom, Romgaz, and Transgaz starting in 2027.

Notably, Nuclearelectrica has demonstrated outstanding performance over the past decade, with a total return exceeding 3,200%. Other significant contributors to the BET index performance in 2026 include Hidroelectrica and Romgaz, along with high-performing issuers like Premier Energy, Cris-Tim Family Holding, and Digi Communications.

Romania’s stock market accomplishment is impressive when compared to other European indices, such as Germany's DAX, which generated a return of approximately 158% over the last ten years, and France's CAC 40, with 167%. The ongoing success of Romania's financial markets highlights a bright future for investment opportunities in the region.
