Romania leads the way in solar energy storage innovation

Romania is rapidly evolving into a model for solar energy production and storage in Europe. With approximately 330,000 households and businesses having embraced solar energy, the country is setting an example for others to follow.

The shift from merely installing photovoltaic panels to focusing on energy storage has been significant. This evolution has been fueled by rising electricity costs and the geopolitical tensions following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which accelerated the development of solar energy in Romania.

As of now, about one-third of the prosumers in Romania have already installed energy storage systems. The government's recent decision to redirect €76 million towards battery systems demonstrates a clear commitment to enhancing energy storage solutions.

The Economist has highlighted the importance of not only having storage capacity but also strategically locating battery systems near large solar parks. Romania is taking this advice to heart, with ambitious projects like the one in Ogrezeni, set to combine 762 MW of solar capacity with a 1 GWh storage system. This project aims to be one of the largest solar-battery hybrid systems in Europe and is expected to be operational by 2027.

Romania is also addressing challenges that arise from the explosive growth of solar energy. Premier Ilie Bolojan has pointed out the need to eliminate speculative projects that occupy capacity in the energy network without leading to actual investments. His administration has released documentation for a staggering 77,000 MW, indicating both the demand and potential for serious investment in the solar sector.

As Romania continues to innovate and expand its solar energy capabilities, it is poised to transition from a country known for rapid panel installation to a significant player in the European market for solar energy and storage solutions.
