In August 2026, Romania's annual inflation rate improved to 6.17%, down from 8.16% in July. This decline offers a hopeful glimpse into the country's economic stability amidst a challenging inflationary landscape.

Despite this positive shift, Romania's inflation rate remains higher than the European Union average of 3.2% for August, which saw a slight increase from 3% in July. In comparison, Sweden recorded the lowest inflation rate in the EU at just 0.3%.

The rise in consumer prices in Romania was driven by notable increases in services, which surged by 11.28%, and non-food goods, which rose by 6.36%. Food prices also contributed to the inflation, climbing by 2.62% in the same month.

The harmonized consumer price index reflected a similar trend, with a slight increase of 0.26% from July. Over the past year, the average change in consumer prices has been 9.5%, indicating persistent challenges in managing inflation.

Looking ahead, the National Bank of Romania has revised its inflation forecast for the end of 2026 to 6.1%, up from a previous estimate of 5.5%. Furthermore, the bank anticipates a further reduction to 3.4% by the end of 2027, a sign of cautious optimism for consumers and businesses alike.

Romania's annual inflation rate compared to August 2025 was recorded at 6.2%, showing the ongoing impact of price changes over the year. As the economy navigates these fluctuations, the focus remains on stabilizing prices and supporting consumer confidence.
